Don't You Just Love Hypocrites?

Rush Limbaugh is the archtypical conservative: more bluster than action, manipulative, hypocritical.

There isn't a USA war that Rush doesn't love. He thinks everyone should help fight for his cause. Everyone but Rush.

Although he was prime material for cannon fodder in the Vietnam years, Rush was unable to perform his patriotic duties. he was declared to be medically unfit for service. Heart malfunction? Head trauma? Cancer? Nope. He had a pimple. More precisely, a pimple on his fat, um..... gluteous maximus.

It's called a pilonidal cyst. No one ever died from a pilonidal cyst, aka fistula.

In fact, a late friend fought in WWI. He had a fistula. While a bit embarrassing, his fistula didn't keep him out of combat. When irritated - like ducking into trenches or running across battlegrounds - his cyst bled. The solution? Well, Uncle Sam didn't send him home. Instead, the Army issued him a supply of ..... you look it up.

So in WWI a fistula earned one a hygiene accessory. When possible, the treatment is antibiotic therapy (not available back then), hot compresses, lancing, and application of depilatory creams (if an ingrown hair is involved).

In the 60s, this owwie was grounds for rejection. Keep in mind: he could have had the cyst treated, insisted that the Army (or Marines - ha!) let him in, and then shipped out to fight in that noble war. He let an outpatient procedure get between him and his patriotic duty. He was, and still is, fully capable of attacking anyone who has the temerity to question the value and/or morality of a military action .... any military action, whether or not instigated by our government.

Of course, among 'hawks' - pro-war (any war) loudmouths - there are many hypocrites like Rush. Think of them as Chicken Hawks. Who served in the military (and who did not)?

Grip, Best Boy, Gaffer. Especially the Gaffer Part

Grip, Best Boy, Gaffer.

John McCain's problems with facts (this week's edition). He has raised the bar for making gaffes.

"I'm afraid it's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border," McCain said. The ABC posting added: “Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border. Afghanistan and Pakistan do.”

-“Somalia” for “Sudan” - As recounted in a reporter’s pool report from McCain’s Straight Talk Express bus on June 30, the senator said while discussing Darfur, a region of Sudan: "How can we bring pressure on the government of Somalia?" Senior adviser Mark Salter corrected him: “Sudan.”

-“Germany” for “Russia” - A YouTube clip from last year memorializes McCain referring to Vladimir Putin of Russia - following a trip to Germany - as “President Putin of Germany.”

-This spring, McCain said troops in Iraq were “down to pre-surge levels” when in fact there were 20,000 more troops than when the surge policy began.

-Also this spring, McCain twice appeared to mistake Sunnis and Shiites, two branches of Islam that split violently. Even though aides and Joe Lieberman repeatedly corrected him, he made that gaffe 4 times in 3 days.

-In Phoenix earlier this month, McCain referred to "Czechoslovakia,” which has been divided since Jan. 1, 1993, into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He also referred to Czechoslovakia during a debate in November and a radio show in April.

-In perhaps the most curious incident, McCain said earlier this month that as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he had tried to confuse his captors by giving the names of Pittsburgh Steelers starting players when asked to identify his squadron mates. McCain has told the story many times over the years - but had always referred correctly to the names he gave as members of the Green Bay Packers.

When he totally blew it on "The Surge" - when it happened, what events it triggered, he had to redefine it as "the surge", the one he defines as "a counter-terrorism measure".... just not the one for which the President takes credit, the one that the rest of the world understands.

And don't get me started on his campaign's anti-Obama smears - the ones that are chock full of lies. FactCheck.org

Pick Your Battles (Part 31873)

Is this the hill for which you want to die?

Soldiers have the good sense to wonder (privately). Even the generals sometimes contemplate that question. It's too bad that the politicians don't stop to think.

Professor Patricia Sullivan (U of Ga) studied the topic. She Investigated 122 military 'interventions' involving the world's big guys: USA, UK, France, USSR/Russia, China - between 1945 and 2003. Using factors such as
  • troop levels
  • alliances
  • troop levels
  • length of conflict
she developed a method for determining the probability that the intervening country will achieve its goals. Hint: Vegas gives much better odds.
  1. Intervention as a means of getting compliance by another nation? 1:6 (that one is a sucker bet).
  2. Propping up a foreign regime? 2:5 (stick to roulette or keno)
  3. US vs North Vietnam & friends? Less than 1 in 4 (put your money into Ponzi schemes - late in the Ponzi racket - or penny stocks)
  4. Overthrow Saddam? 2:3 (duh!)
  5. Routing insurgents to bring democracy? 1:4 (and the damned fool said to go on)
The Big Kuhuna of using force to achieve political goals: as troop levels go up, the probability of succeeding goes down.
